How to find us

Directions

If you are coming from the East  (from Colorado Springs):

  • Take Highway 24 west-bound from Colorado Springs.
  • Turn left (south) onto County Road 23. This turnoff is located approximately 15.5 miles west of Lake George. The turnoff is at the sign (on the left side of the road) for the Chaparral Store.
  • Go about 2.8 miles south on Highway 23 until you reach the "T" in the road
  • Turn right onto County Road 59.
  • Go approximately 5.5 miles west, past Chaparral store and the ranch house, until you reach the gate to the gravel pit and launch site on your right (North side of the road).

If you are coming from the West  (from Fairplay/Hartsel via Highway 285):

  • After passing through Hartsel (don't blink!), immediately turn right/south onto Highway 9
  • Immediately turn left/east onto County Road 59.
  • Drive approximately 5.3 miles east. The gate to the gravel pit and launch site will be on your left (North side of the road).

Important: Please do not approach the launch site from Elkhorn Road (CR 15) off of Highway 24. This is a private road and the gate will likely be locked. Instead, please take CR 59 from Hartsel to the West or CR 23 to CR 59 from the East.

Important: Please do not speed when passing the ranch east of the launch site on CR59! The ranch is home to our land owners, who deserve our respect for their property and safety.

Update 9/1/2026

The fire ban has finally been lifted and we are go for a launch on 9/19 unless conditions change. I will make a final decision on 9/17. As always, please check the website for the latest information before heading to Hartsel. Finally, there is no camping on-site and vehicles must remain on established roads.

This has not been a great year for rockets and a lot of us have had to find some other venues to fill our rockerty void. I wanted to share an email from a young rockteer and his mom that I think you will enjoy reading and will want to visit the website that they shared.

"Hi,

I hope the day is going great! I just wanted to get in touch with the Tripoli-Colorado team on behalf of my son, Aidan, because you've been such an awesome help with his Space Exploration merit badge for Scouting America. One of the requirements he needs to complete is to build, launch, and recover a model rocket, which he's very excited about! While researching the hobby and how to get started, we came across your club's links page, www.tripolicolorado.org/links/links.html and we really appreciated all the helpful information it shared. Thank you so much!

Aidan also had the wonderful idea of passing along another resource he thought was useful. It's www.elevators.com/lift-off-model-rocket-maintenance-and-technology/ and it covers everything from the history and safety of model rockets to construction, the science behind them, and some fun facts.

He thought it could be a nice addition to your page, especially for people who are just getting started with model rockets. If you end up using it, I'd love to be able to tell Aidan! I know he'd get a kick out of seeing something he found actually make it onto the site to help other beginners out. And I'm sure he'd be pretty happy to show his merit badge counselor too!

Please let us know what you think if you have the time!

All the best and enjoy the rest of your day,
Aidan and Alice Schorr
